FACULTY OF HOMEOPATHY
TRAINING

The BAHVS supports the education programmes of the Faculty of Homeopathy. The Faculty of Homeopathy was incorporated by Act of Parliament to further the training of qualified physicians in homeopathy (homoeopathy / homœopathy). 

The Faculty Act has since been amended to include veterinary surgeons, dentists, pharmacists and other state-registered health care professionals.Teaching is delivered by Teaching Centres, in hospital units and elsewhere around the UK, with the Faculty as the accreditation and examining body.

Veterinary courses are currently integrated with medical courses, with all the benefits that such synergism brings.

Full Course

The total course provides a minimum of 120 hours tuition, spread over three years. The course content is structured to exceed the standard required for the post-graduate Faculty Membership examination, and veterinary surgeons who successfully complete the Veterinary Membership examination are awarded the qualification: Veterinary Member of the Faculty of Homeopathy (VetMFHom). This was the first such veterinary qualification in the world and is used as a model for international accreditation through the International Association for Veterinary Homeopathy (IAVH).

Post Grad Exams

A new ‘introductory-level’ post-graduate examination and qualification has been devised by the Faculty, to provide some recognition of the preliminary phase of accredited training and to improve standards of expertise in early trainees. Those who pass the examination are entitled to use the letters ‘LFHom(Vet)’ but this level of qualification does not qualify the holder to take referrals in homeopathy.

Further teaching is provided by post-graduate teaching at the Teaching Centres, by the papers given at the Annual Congress of the British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons and by papers of the bi-annual congress of the International Association. Other events may qualify for accreditation for CPD.

Neither the Faculty of Homeopathy nor the BAHVS provide teaching in homeopathy for animals to any other than veterinary surgeons, who alone are legally entitled to treat animals (other than one’s own animals).

NOTE: In the United Kingdom, only courses accredited by the Faculty of Homeopathy are recognised by the British Association of Homeopathic Veterinary Surgeons.

Holders of the specialist qualification VetMFHom were listed by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) in a separate section of the ‘Register’, from 2000 to 2007, in order to help veterinary surgeons locate a specialist to whom to refer cases or to help members of the public to locate homeopathic help for an animal. The Royal College has since decided to ‘streamline’ the Register by removing that page. The BAHVS regrets this reduction of client service.
